Home Education Courses

You choose the courses, we provide the lesson plans!

Each online course enrollment is $10 per month.  Each class has its own web page that the student logs into each week, or each day.  New weekly lessons are available Monday morning.  Previous weeks will be accessible so you can always look back for review or to catch up if you fall behind.  Some courses have a forum for questions and answers.  Links to outside web sites, pdf files, and ebooks are provided on the course web site, but many courses also require the purchase of textbooks and other materials.  Parents are responsible for grading and correcting student assignments. Some courses will have quizzes that will be submitted and graded online.

Composition assistance and grading services are available on a limited basis for an additional fee.

Below is a list of courses planned for September 2016.  Active links to course description pages will be provided for courses as they become available.  Blue courses will also be available for live weekly class meetings at Sancta Familia Academy.

Home School Co-op Classes

We offer group classes developed by SFA staff as well as third party curriculum providers, offering the benefits of group learning and accountability on a limited basis while maintaining parental control and a home education program.  90% of material is best taught one-on-one at the student's own level of ability, but the other 10% is best taught in a classroom environment.  That is why we offter weekly classes for the areas in which group meetings are beneficial as well as an individualized curriculum for use in the homeschool.

Our Elementary American Studies and World Geography courses include a combination of personal student notebooks, group sound-offs, and oral reports.  Students study all 50 states, or all 7 continents & various countries of the world, while compiling their own Book of the United States or Book of the World.  Using Logos School's Sound-offs, students learn facts about all 50 states incuding capital cities.  Students also do more indepth studies on a select few states and countries while they prepare oral reports to be given in class.  For example, with a class of ten students, each student would do five individual state reports over the course of the school year.  Our primary students study the animals of the world while covering the geography of the seven continents.  For each continent studied, students will prepare an oral report on a native animal, while grammar students do their reports on the history and culture of a country.

We also offer weekly classes in Art, Music, and Science for hands-on and group learning experience.

Two of the most important reasons for group meetings when using the classical approach are accountability and an audience.  Since drill, memorization, and recitation are at the very foundation of a classical education, students need an avenue for demonstrating what they've committed to memory.  Weekly class meetings provide both a dealine by which something must be learned and practice in reciting in front of an audience including teachers and classmates.  This is the reason we are seeing new products pop up in the Catholic homeschool market, such as Classically Catholic Memory and Catholic Schoolhouse.  And best of all, SFA students top all of this off with two school recital programs per year, giving students an opportunity to speak in front of a larger audience of parents, grandparents, and friends after months of practice in the home and in the classroom.

We have two different types of recitations at SFA:  1)Cumulative Daily Drill in math, science, history, geography, English grammar, and Latin grammar; and 2) Memory work in poetry, prayers, catechism, and Bible verses.  In addition, we encourage the memorization and singing of songs and hymns, including Latin hymns, which are practiced individually at home and weekly in a group in preparation for singing publicly at the school recital program.

All of this brings us to another area in which students who learn only at home will miss out without the benefit of a co-op or community programs - Drama! - as well as speech and debate for older students.  A classical education is impossible to acheive in a closet!  What good is learning Logic if you have no one to practice your newly learned debating skills on?  What use is the art of rhetoric without an audience?  These are classroom courses that when taught at home alone are meager at best.  Maybe this is one reason why so many parents give up on home education and send their junior high and high school age children to a brick & mortar school.  Modern schooling is a poor substitute for an education.  It would be much better to continue to home educate and join a group with other homeschool families where you can reap all of the benefits of a classroom without sacrificing your family's values or your child's soul.
